Dental braces

Dental baces are orthodontic devices used to correct the position of teeth and arches, create spaces between teeth, correct bite and help teeth develop correctly.

Orthodontic treatment can be successfully carried out at any age. In recent years, the number of adult patients has increased considerably. The tissues involved in tooth movement are the same in both children and adults, but the lack of growth of the jawbone in adults limits orthodontic treatment. The health of the teeth and their supporting structures (periodontium), as well as the health of the muscles and the temporomandibular joint can influence orthodontic treatment and conversely, orthodontic treatment can improve or treat dental, periodontal, muscle and joint complaints completely.

In terms of orthodontic treatment, adults fall into 2 categories:

1 Young adults who have wanted orthodontic treatment in the past but have not been able to have it for various reasons. In this case, the aim of orthodontic treatment is to improve quality of life by improving aesthetic and functional appearance.
Adults requiring orthodontic treatment as part of a more complex dental treatment plan. In this case, the aim of orthodontic treatment is to provide the conditions for periodontal, restorative prosthodontic or implant prosthodontic treatment.

Gaps between teeth, dental crowding, protrusion (too "forward" position of front teeth) / retrusion (too "backward" position of front teeth), deep occlusion (exaggerated over-capping of front teeth) / open occlusion (lack of vertical contact of teeth), reverse occlusion ("bite"), tipping of teeth towards edentulous neighbours (after an old extraction) - all of these can be corrected in adults by orthodontic treatment.

Also, in the case of dental crowding, hygiene is difficult - this increases the risk of caries and promotes the development of tartar, which in turn leads to periodontal disease: inflammation and receding gums. This leads to a vicious circle.

Left untreated, malocclusions in adults can even have detrimental effects on general health (digestive, respiratory, muscular, postural problems), cause speech defects, even psychological and emotional disorders, inferiority complexes.

A pleasing physical appearance is essential for increasing confidence and self-esteem and thus improving quality of life.

Orthodontic treatment in adults is of 2 types:

Camouflage treatment of the dento-maxillary anomaly, consisting of dental displacements so that their position compensates for the imbalance of the maxillary bone bases.
In more severe cases - complex orthodontic-surgical treatment, which consists of rebalancing the jaw bones by surgically shifting the bone bases.

There is a wide range of orthodontic braces for adults, depending on needs, preferences, aesthetic requirements: fixed metal braces (brackets), aesthetic braces (ceramic, sapphire), "invisible" braces (Invisalign system, Clear Aligner, Incognito lingual braces), etc.
