Dental fillings

Cavities are the destruction of dental hard tissue caused by bacteria living in the oral cavity.

Dental caries treatments, Cluj

In general, early treatment of carious lesions is less expensive than treatment of an extensive carious lesion, neglected until pain brings us to the dentist's office.

The treatment of a simple dental caries involves cleaning the necrotic tooth tissue and restoring the morpho-function of the tooth in question from physiognomic material, in a colour similar to the rest of the tooth surface, with a filling.

In our office, we use state-of-the-art composite materials, suitable for each individual case. In the case of large losses of dental hard substance (>40% of the crown volume), we will have to resort to restoring the dental crown with an inlay (ceramic or composite). Even if such a treatment is more expensive than a simple filling, its marginal closure and colour stability make it indispensable in the treatment of this type of carious lesion. If the coronal destruction is of even greater dimensions, we will apply a veneer crown, as restoration by dental filling cannot ensure strength and stability over time.

But often we face an even bigger problem. Some long-neglected carious processes evolve into the pulp chamber, causing dental pain and forcing endodontic treatment, followed by reconstruction of the tooth by a method appropriate to the clinical case. Nowadays, technological developments allow the use of the highest quality materials, which are long-lasting and adapted to the natural shade of the tooth, as well as pain-free methods.

Composite fillings are the most commonly used solution. They have evolved impressively over time, and there are now materials that can mimic the exact appearance of teeth and provide long-lasting protection. After cleaning the cavity of any traces of decay and applying the treatment, composite material is added and the dentist will shape it to give the tooth as natural a look as possible.

The composite is increasingly replacing the old amalgam, a metallic grey material containing mercury. Amalgam is hard and durable, but very unattractive because of its colour and mercury content. Another problem with amalgam is that it expands and contracts due to temperature changes, and some people believe this can lead to the development of dental cracks and fractures. This is why more and more people are choosing to replace their amalgam fillings with more aesthetically pleasing composite ones.

What dental cavities are?

Dental caries is a chronic destructive process of the hard tissues of the tooth, without inflammatory character, producing necrosis and destruction, followed by coronal or root cavitations. Caries develops only on teeth in contact with the oral environment and never on teeth completely enclosed or very well isolated from the oral environment.

How long does a filling last?

On average, a lead can last up to 6-8 years. However, we recommend that during this period regular check-ups should be carried out and proper oral hygiene maintained.

If you find yourself in this situation, see your dentist as soon as possible. Causes can be: teeth grinding, excessive saliva, either a cavity that is too large and does not allow good adhesion of the material, or an old filling whose structure has deteriorated.

Is it normal for the place to hurt after the filling?
Yes, it is normal if we mean moderate sensitivity that allows us to carry on with normal daily activities. Persistent and intense pain requires consultation with a dentist. If necessary, pain medication can be applied on the day of the filling.
